Porcelain Onlays

If the tooth has significant cavities, once the cavities are removed there will not be enough healthy tooth structure to support a filling and the tooth may fracture or break. A porcelain inlay is a better restoration than a composite filling because a tooth sometimes needs extra support.

Porcelain veneers are made to fit your tooth. An onlay covers and protects the occlusal (biting) surface of the tooth, similar to a crown. Unlike a crown, which covers the entire tooth structure, an inlay fits like a puzzle piece into the cusps of the remaining healthy tooth structure.

First visit: what to expect:

To minimize discomfort, the treatment area will be thoroughly numbed. Any decay is removed and the tooth is shaped using a handpiece. Once the tooth has been prepped, molds and models of your teeth are taken and sent to the laboratory to make the finished restoration. At the end of this visit, your dentist will place a temporary restoration on your tooth, which you will wear until the second visit when the permanent restoration will be placed.

The second visit:

The temporary is removed and the new permanent porcelain onlay is cemented in place during the second visit.

Advantages of an onlay:

  • Reduces the risk of irritation because an onlay does not penetrate the gum tissue.
  • Cleaning and flossing are easy.
  • TrUSmile Team would be delighted to discuss this procedure with you. You can book an appointment online or contact our office for a private consultation.
